To be a better leader, one must first learn to know themselves.  That's one of the key lessons, high school students learn during RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), a four day leadership program held June 16-19, 2016.  RYLA District Director, Clint Ishmael will be offering an inside look on the RYLA experience on Friday, May 13, 2016 during a break out session at the All-Clubs Conference Celebration.

Established in 1971 by Rotary International, RYLA is an intensive leadership development program for youth leaders.  RYLA provides training for outstanding young men and women from public and non-public high schools, ages 16-18.

Based at Texas Women’s University in Denton, Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self” embodies the essence of this program.  The curriculum is designed to offer hands-on activities and exercises.  Both girls and boys are challenged to four days of discussions, inspirational addresses, leadership training, and social activities designed to enhance personal development, good citizenship, and better leadership skills. The intent of this program is to prepare students with leadership skills for their senior year and beyond.

RYLA is sponsored by District 5790 of Rotary, representing some 66 Rotary Clubs across the Texas North Central Plains area. This year’s goal is for the district is to select and sponsor approximately 130 young people that will meet to focus on leadership and decision making skills.
