July - Start Your Rotary Year
Planning the new Rotary Year and Reporting Club Goals in Rotary Club Central
If your club is one of the 26 clubs that has built a strategic plan for the year and entered your clubs goals in Rotary Club Central, you are well on your way to doing even greater "good works" in your communities.

Planning is hard work. Organizing Rotarian leaders and encouraging them to provide ideas and input for the clubs strategic initiatives and then organizing the committees to perform the work, building a budget and developing written goals is a time consuming, daunting task for club presidents and the clubs Board of Directors. Yet that is exactly what most Rotary Clubs do year in and year out. With over 35,000 clubs world-wide doing good work, Rotary International is asking every Club world-wide to share their goals on Rotary Club Central. What does each club intend to do in 2016-17 to grow and engage membership? How do clubs intend to publicize their efforts? What kind of service projects will they do and how many volunteer hours will be spent? What will those service projects cost? Most importantly, clubs should share their service project ideas with Rotary Clubs everywhere via "Share in Showcase". What is your club doing for it's Youth Leaders and Youth Exchange Programs? Of course, Rotary International want us to share our clubs' plans to support the Rotary Foundation, particularly during this our 100th year of the Rotary Foundation.

2016-2017 Rotary Awards

There are several categories of awards in Rotary that apply to clubs and individual members. Each year qualification criteria for awards changes depending on the RI President’s chosen theme, the DG’s goals, and the Awards Committee preferences. This year is no different. All awards can be found in the Playbook on the district web site.

The biggest change at the District 5790 level is that we are attempting to streamline the submission process by going all electronic and greatly simplifying the questions and answers. There are two links in the previously referenced Playbook under Awards in the left hand column what allow you to see the questions for each award or to actually play with those live forms.

Presidential Citation - Updating your Rotary Club Central Member Profile

As part of the Presidential Citation Challenge, each club has been tasked with Online Tool Adoption. Most of the goals are simple to accomplish, but the easiest of them is having at least 50% of club members registered in My Rotary on the Rotary International website.

Many Rotarians may not know that every Rotarian has a profile on the Rotary International website! But unless you log into your own account and add your information, your profile will be incomplete.

Now, we all know that each club has a variety of members each with their own particular strengths and weaknesses—and computers are not necessarily every Rotarian’s forte. Therefore, we hope that those of you who are more technologically inclined might help the rest; remember, what may seem simple and obvious to you may not be so simple or obvious to someone else.

District Services Team Completes Club Website and Social Media Study

Picture this, one of your members just had a wonderful business lunch with a client. Getting to know each other the conversation eventually gets around to "what do you do when you are not working". Your fellow Rotarian takes advantage of the opportunity to brag about your Rotary Club. The client's curiosity is piqued and says what's Rotary? Your member hands them the Rotary "see us in action card", tells them the name of your club and invites them to your next meeting. Upon returning to work, the client googles your club's name.

If this truly was one of your members and the client did google your club name, would that client be inspired to accept the invitation based on what was discovered in the Google search?

The District 5790 District Services team has been wondering the same thing. So, we performed a very basic study of the Internet presence of every single one of the 69 Rotary Clubs in our district.

Visioning Energizes Membership
At the recent Lonestar PETs District 5790 session on Rotary Club Central and Strategic Planning one of the president elects raised his hand for a comment. Quoting a discussion he had with the president elect sitting beside him he noted that one of the best things a club leader can do for their club is to invite members of the District 5790 Visioning Team to lead the club through a Vision Seminar. The president elect he was quoting was Staci Markardt of the Aledo Rotary Club. According to Staci, the session energized their membership and provided the club with consensus goals. "They learned so much, not only about memberships ideas but about Rotary in general". According to current Aledo RC President Micheal Smith the session provided direction and spurned enthusiasm.

Growing the under 40 Membership Numbers - A Millennial Membership Committee
Millennial Membership Committee
This year’s Presidential Citation has a new component. There is a criteria to add 2 new members under the age of 40. Encouraging rotary clubs to seek new membership under the age of 40 seems to be in response to the aging population of the clubs. Civic organizations in our country appear to be declining in membership and getting young professionals involved in community service is a great start to rebuilding the bond our country has experienced in recent years.

One Clubs Novel Approach to No Compter for a Child Left Behind
Computers for Kids Program

The Rotary Club of Grapevine has been doing a program to refurbish computers for children and families who do not currently have one in their homes. Since 2004, the Grapevine club has been collecting donations from rotary members, neighbors, and friends to partner with the Grapevine Middle School students on this project. The student must write an essay about why they would like to have a computer and how their families would benefit from and utilize this now critical tool in our world.

A Walk Down 2015-2016 Memory Lane
Reflections on the Rotary Year 2015-16!
Now that the 2015-2016 Rotary year is over I wanted to take the opportunity to reflect on the year as a District Governor.

When the year first started, I was very nervous primarily because I did not want to let down any Rotarian in our District.  I wanted to be inspirational, be a testament to what Rotary can do for others, encourage Rotarians to be vibrant and engaged in their Clubs.
