What is that Polio Eradication Picture?
It's a picture of Afghanistan/Pakistan cross border vaccinators looking for children with signs of acute flacid paralysis (an indicator of possible Polio infection) as they vaccinate children who may have been missed in regional immunization campaigns.
  • Rotary is committed to raise $50 Million (including Rotarian, public, and DDF donations) to be matched by $100 mil from the Gates Foundation - for each of the next three years - for a total of $450 million for the Global Polio Eradication effort.  And we did it this year!  In the 2017-18 Rotary Year, we reached slightly over $50 Million!
  • Papua New Guinea, Kenya, SYRIA, SOMALIA, Nigeria & DRC - Vaccine Derived Type 2 Polio case reported in 2018: Papua New Guinea - one case - with a large scale immunization campaign starting this week, Nigeria - one case, Somalia - 3 cases, DRC - 7 cases.
  • Quote of the Day - "Once Polio is wiped off of the face of the earth, we will mark a major step forward in pursuit of the third Sustainable Development Goal, to 'ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages'." — John Hewko - General Secretary of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation
  • The Final Three Endemic Countries:
  • Pakistan - No new Polio cases reported this week. Three Polio cases reported in 2018 - the most recent case was from the Dukki, Balochistan Province with an onset of paralysis on 5/18/18.  Eight cases reported in 2017. A door to door immunization campaign reaching 11 million children concluded this week.  Four new Polio-Positive Environmental Samples were reported this week in Pakistan.
  • Afghanistan - One new Polio case reported this week.  Nine Polio cases reported in 2018 - the most recent case was from the Nad-e-Ali District of the Helmand province with the onset of paralysis on 06/01/18.  Fourteen cases reported in 2017.  A sub-national vaccination campaign reaching 6.4 million children concluded this week.  Two new Polio-Positive Environmental Samples were reported this week in Afghanistan.
  •  Nigeria - No new Wild Polio cases have been reported in 2017 or 2018.   The most recent Polio case was reported on 8/20/16.  Nigeria has once again gone 1-3/4 years without a Wild Polio case.
