Pollinator Gardens

The Pilot Knob Rotary Club of Denton has planted two pollinator gardens at local non profits. Our food supply is threatened by climate change, loss of habitat, pesticides and the disappearance of bees and other pollinators. The Monarch butterfly population is in decline, and pollinator gardens are havens for the propagation of these essential organisms.

The photo on the left shows the pollinator garden planted at "Serve Denton", a center that provides space for 20 nonprofit organizations and a food pantry. A similar garden has been planted at CASA.

Lithium-ion Battery Recycling

For the second year, PKRC is partnering with Guyer High School’s Advanced Placement Environmental Science classes (their clever acronym is APES) to have a Lithium-ion battery recycling event on April 19 under the umbrella of ESRAG. Their teacher is happy to participate as this is the class service project for the year. The students are deeply involved: presenting to the City Council; addressing faculty and other classes; sharing on social media and communicating with other city schools, peers, families; competing in contests for original art, slogan and videos and doing the physical collection of batteries and devices containing them.

The high school held three competitions for works that highlighted their Lithium-ion recycling event to be held on April 19, 2025 in Parking Lot 'B'.  The competitions were for:

  • the best artwork
  • the best slogan, and
  • the best video.

The graphic on the left shows the winning artwork for the Lithium-ion recycling drive, with the winning slogan below it  (They power today, they power tomorrow, they power the future.).

Two entries for the best video tied for first place, and they are both shown below (click on 'Watch on YouTube' to get the best experience.)

About the Environmental Sustainability RAG

In support of Rotary's seventh area of focus, "Protecting the Environment", there is the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group https://esrag.org/ whose membership is open to everyone, not just Rotarians. The organization is “boots on the ground” and action-oriented; the website is rich with resources for your club to get involved with starting an environmental project. Under the “Our Work” tab at the top of the page are intriguing initiatives like Operation Pollination, Lithium-ion Battery Recycling and Lunch Ot of Landfills. The latter can be as simple as placing a refrigerator in schools to capture unused food items from students: cartons of milk, fruit and applesauce containers, whole fruits. These items are available for other students to grab as snacks throughout the school day or can be donated to other organizations to be distributed to the food insecure.
