The Rotary Club of Wichita Falls Southwest believes in a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe in our communities and in ourselves.
In baseball playoff terms, the RC of Wichita Falls Southwest hit the ball out of the park with the bases loaded, two outs and two strikes in the 7th game of the world series through their October 17th Fentanyl Crises panel discussion.
Shocked by recent deaths of young people in Wichita Falls due to Fentanyl overdoes, members of the Wichita Falls Southwest Rotary Club decided to do something about it by hosting a community panel discussion to create awareness and discuss how members of the community can join in the fight to halt this crises.
Are members of your club alarmed by this crises and want to take action? Click the above image and download the power point file used by our friends at the Rotary Club of Wichita Falls Southwest to get the process started in your community. If you want more details about how to get started, contact member Jack Brown. He will gladly provide the steps their club went through in a fairly short period of time. Imagine yourself as a 15 year old Rotary Youth Exchange student from Korea on your way to meet your host family in O'Fallon, Illinois. Your coast to coast flight lands in the DFW Airport as expected but late. Then you find out through your limited English skills that you missed your connecting flight to St. Louis.
That is exactly what happened this past Thursday at 8:42 PM in the evening (August 11th) to Kim Yung Piip who goes by the nick name Fredrick. Fredric called his host family, Kim Sabella, from O'Fallen Rotary Club in Southern, Illinois. The quick thinking Kim managed to get Fredrick to quickly get back to the American Airlines gate to put his luggage on the next flight out in morning. Her next task was to find someone near the airport that could provide a place to sleep for the night. This was a task she did not take lightly, this 15 year old was entrusted to her care and now she was tasked with finding someone that she did not know a completely different city to care Fredric for the evening and get him back to the airport in the morning.

In Yemen, Dr Mutahar Ahmed leads the country’s acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance efforts, which are vital to tracking Poliovirus transmission. Despite long-running conflict, a critical humanitarian situation and a cVDPV2 outbreak, wide-reaching AFP surveillance in Yemen tells a promising story where health workers are able to detect polio spread and inform response tactics.

We celebrate Rotary’s 117th birthday on 23 February and we focus on Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution all February long. Therefore, I invite you to consider two ways of advancing peace and world understanding in these challenging times, globally and domestically. The challenges are great yet our capacity as Rotarians is even greater. So, what can we do?
We have had a nice increase in total clubs participating as compared to last year.
Traditionally the District contest is held during District conference which prior to the pandemic was in May. This year the District conference is at the end of June which is not a good time for high school seniors, in particular, but most high school students in general. So we are now working on an alternative date in May and a venue for this contest.

Fort Worth Rotary Club has been granted the IFSR Youth Service Award as a result of an article published in the NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth.
This interesting story starts with a bunch of Rotarians buying cookies from girl scouts who are raising funds for their nurses and first responders project. To help them reach their goal, Rotary members from the Fort Worth Rotary Club bought out all their cookies. That action resulted in the NBC 5 video clip above that was seen by members of the Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians. The following is a memo from Steve Henning of the fellowship who announced the award.

I've done a lot of investigation of this format for our Rotary Club - there are a LOT of people who are actively attempting to do this. You start off by clarifying exactly what the goals are:
This months Fireside Chat with DG Roger Paschal will feature Rotary's 35 year fight to end polio worldwide. Starting in 1979 with its first project in the Philippines through to today we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent. But, as most Rotarians will tell you, "we are not done" and will not be done until the final two countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan are declared "polio free" by the Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization. The total elimination of polio is just as important now as it was before Covid 19 changed our world. Why?
Although Covid 19 requires us to protect each other and be safe, we can still celebrate the great District 5790 Leadership team headed up by District Governor Roger Paschal. Economically priced at $30 per person our host is DG Roger's home club the Rotary Club of Fort Worth International have a wonderful event planned. Rotary Members from throughout District 5790 will be there to enjoy fellowship and Joe T's famous Mexican food. Register to join us below. Sponsorship opportunities are available. See separate story.

Herbert J. Taylor was a successful, young senior executive
with the Jewel Tea Company in Chicago, Illinois.
Mr Herbert left his great position at Jewal Tea, to take over the then failing Club Aluminum. Herbert Taylor believed that if the people at Club Aluminum could “think right,” they would “do right” and he set out to find a simple guide to “right conduct” as he described, “a sort of ethical yardstick” - something everyone could apply to what they thought, said and did in their relations with others.

As we start the new 2018 rotary year we have already started looking towards the 2019/20 Youth Exchange Year.
We have re-branded the year YE program as the District 5790 Youth Exchange Scholarship Program. The scholarship brand is being used because what we are able to offer through the YE program is; free room and board, free tuition at a school in a host country and a monthly stipend while in that country. The monetary value of this alone is approximately $15,000. If we add in the value of living abroad for up to a year, learning a new language and developing resume building life skills then the value is incalculable!
We owe it to the students of our district to share this opportunity with them.
If your club sponsors an Interact Club at your local High School I would love the opportunity to come and speak about the Youth Exchange Scholarship Program.
The sooner in the year we can get this information to the students the better to determine if they are candidates. We will conduct district interviews in November and December and students need time to think about their options.
I look forward to hearing from the Interact coordinator at your club!

We know that you are community service driven as a natural part of embodying “SERVICE ABOVE SELF”, so you may already have these connections to community providers. IF you need it, as your Community Service Assistance Team, we will help connect your club to organizations in your area that provide services to the homeless and unsheltered.
ATO Club Culture Team members are scheduled for a training session on September 21. Club executives are encouraged to contact a team member to share their experience with these tools.

Congratulations, Trinity High School Interact Club
So, how does a high school Interact Club become an award winner?
By being an Interact Club whose members have a gifts to willingly share with the community. And that are mentored by and engaged with the sponsoring Rotary Club members.
As the webmaster of the District 5790 website, I had requested that all the 2017-2018 District 5790 award winning Rotary clubs send me photo's to include in a website story about the 2018 District Conference All Clubs Celebration district recognition awards. The Mid Cities Pacesetter Rotary Club one two awards including 1st Place in Vocational Service for medium size clubs. So naturally when they sent photo's they sent several photo's of the award winning Trinity High School Interact Club. As I reviewed the photo's I was struck by how engaged the Mid City Pacesetter members were with the members of the club they were sponsoring. At that point, I decided to do a separate story focusing on the Trinity High School Interact Club and their sponsor club Mid Cities Pacesetters RC. Club President Frank Allen was asked to prepare a short article about both clubs and their success. What follows are Franks article and several photo's from their very successful Rotary year.
District 5790, once again, recognized vocations that live the Rotary moto, “Service Above Self.” On Saturday, May 18, 2018, at the annual District Conference, awards were presented to a Teacher, a Veteran, a Police Officer and a Firefighter.
Clubs around the district recognized these professions throughout the year at their weekly meetings. The clubs then submitted a nomination for each profession to the district for recognition at the district level. Each of those nominations, from the various clubs, were compiled and presented to a panel of judges who then selected one person to be recognized for each profession.
“These are some of the best Four-Way Test Speech Contest talks we have ever heard.”
“These kids are really bright and know how to research for their talks.”
These are but a few of the comments heard about the speakers at the District Four-Way Test Speech Contest held on Saturday, May 19, at the District Celebration. There were seven contestants, all in high school inRotary District 5790
Rotary Club members in District 5790 truly are People of Action
During this years May 18 and May 19th District Conference All Clubs Celebration, several clubs were recognized for the achievements of their members during the 2017-2018 Rotary Year. These clubs were recognized for excellence in Youth Service Programs, Vocational Service Programs, Community Service Programs, International Service Programs, Club Service Programs, Foundation participation. Membership Initiatives and Public Image practices.
Awards were given in each category according to club size Small (less 25 members), Medium (25 to 44 members) and Large (45 members or greater). To be considered for an award in each category, club leadership completed and submitted an electronic awards criteria form for each category. 36 clubs participated (17 large, 8 medium & 11 small).
To determine Club of the Year for the Small, Medium and Large size clubs, points for each of the 8 categories were added. Club with the most points in each club size category was awarded Club of the Year honors for that category.
Congratulations to the following clubs for their stellar achievements this past year:
Elizabeth Thrushto be one of four participants in the Saturday Evening End Polio Panel Discussion
Elizabeth Thrush is a Project Support Specialist in the Comprehensive Family Immunization Unit at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which is the Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Americas.
Derek Ehrhardt to be one of four participants in the Saturday Evening End Polio Panel Discussion
Derek Ehrhardt is an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and has been with the agency since 2006. He currently serves as Lead for the Eastern Mediterranean Region Polio Team in the Global Immunization Division. His team has responsibility for implementing CDC’s strategies to support polio eradication efforts in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, including Afghanistan and Pakistan, where polio remains endemic.
The last of three Regional Four-Way Test Speech Contests was held Saturday, April 28, in Bedford. And now seven contestants will advance to the final contest at the District Celebration at 3 PM on Saturday, May 19, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel at the DFW Airport.
Congratulations to the 36 District 5790 Rotary Clubs
that participated in this years Club Award Recognition Process
On Saturday afternoon May 19th, several of our clubs will be celebrating recognition as recipients of one or more of the District 5790 Awards given to the most exceptional clubs in our district. Clearly, every one of the 71 Rotary Clubs in our district exemplify Rotary: Making A Difference. In order to recognize the creme-de-creme of those clubs the District 5790 Awards Committee has established an awards submission process where clubs that wish to participate can submit information about their clubs stellar accomplishments this past year. There are 8 categories in which wards can be received.
We have had some pretty great fundraisers and service projects this year. We will have a Hall of Friendship and Project Displayfor you to feature your Projects or Fundraisers that you had during the year.
Diane is the immediate PDG of the International District 6330 which covers part of Ontario, Canada and part of Michigan, USA. In 2016-17 her District demonstrated how as Rotarians we “Serve Humanity” and together we all celebrated the 100th Anniversary of our Rotary Foundation. Her great joy was seeing the amazing things that the Rotary Clubs do to “Make a Difference” in their communities and all around the world.
Past District Governor Donna-Lee Young Rubin doesn’t want to talk much about her life and career. Rather, she wants to focus on her passion for Rotary.
A native of Boston, Donna-Lee served as Governor of District 7930, which extends along the Eastern seaboard from Boston to Salem, NH, in 2001-02, the same year that Club member Peter Lagarias was Governor of District 5150.

This year we will only be using 3 Training Rooms. Participants will be using the same training room throughout the entire day. We will be partnering Rise Against Hunger with their Pack-a-Meal Program. When you join us for breakfast, you can choose to eat first and then join the group of Rotary Pack-a-Meal volunteers on the assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. Or, you can eat first and join the assembly line after you have finished breakfast.

Bring your Texas Brag to the Club Leadership Training Assemblies
"Be the Inspiration". This year at our 2018-19 Club Leadership Training Assemblies on April 21st in Fort Worth and April 28th in Graham, we are encouraging our Rotary Clubs to "Inspire" each other.
Of course, being Texan's we love to BRAG. Right? We do everything bigger, better, faster, smarter and so on. Dizzy Dean used to say, "it ain't braggin if you kin do it".
And since you've proven you can do it, we would like you to inspire others to do it. Do you have a project you would like to promote? Are you looking for partners for a grant project? Do you have a fund raiser you would like to promote? Or, have a really cool fund raiser that other clubs could adopt? Or, perhaps you have a story board that shows all the great projects and programs your club is doing? Whatever your club is doing that is great information to share or participate in...BRING It...BRAG ABOUT It and share it with Rotary members throughout District 5790.
That is do you communicate Rotary's End Polio message and create awareness among fellow Rotary members and the community at large about Rotary's End Polio initiative and the importance if donating to End Polio Now? If so, you are a polio crusader.
Now meet a really bold End Polio Crusader, Jenna Buscemi (Rotary Club of Houston Energy Corridor, TX) and District 5890 DG Bill Palko (Rotary Club of Northshore, TX) who have died their hair (Jenna) and mustache (Bill) purple to raise awareness for Global Polio Eradication. Jenna was featured in the March 2018 Rotarian magazine where she said she is used to the strange glances, and said "I'll say to them, I bet you're wondering about my hair, and then I'll give them my elevator speech about Rotary and the current facts about Polio.
How about a purple goatee? What do you think DG Chris McLucas?

About the Rotary International District 5790 Honoring Those Who Serve Vocational Initiative.
Rotary Clubs throughout District 5790 are recognizing the vocations of our Communities first responders and teachers on a quarterly basis. According to District 5790 Vocational Award Recognition. Chair Eddie Salame, during each quarter of the 2017/18 Rotary year district clubs will recognize a police officer, firefighter, paramedic and a teacher. Depending on club, recognition will be done in the same month of the quarter or they can be spread out throughout the quarter. In other words, clubs can recognize a teacher the first month of the quarter, a firefighter/paramedic the second month and a police officer on the third month. Or clubs may also recognize all three professionals in the same month.

UNT Rotaract is hosting a screening of the movie "Spirits' Homecoming" which is a Korean drama that uncovers the horrors of the use of Comfort Women by the Japanese Imperial Army in WWII. Comfort women were young girls from all over eastern Asia that were taken from their homes and forced into sex slavery for the Japanese military.
During the first 7 months of the year, we are seeing excellent results in club membership by several clubs in the district.
If you are struggling in your club, please develop a solid plan with goals and timelines. Ask all members for help! Contact a growing club to find out what they are doing that is contributing to their success. Update your plan with the new ideas you discovered. Encourage your fellow Rotary members to make membership recruitment and retention a priority among every member of your club.
DISTRICT 5790 is a diverse district that is growing new clubs every year. We have been fortunate to have many outstanding leaders throughout our district who have served the clubs and Rotarians in the district. We are seeking the best and brightest to lead our district in the future. We are seeking men and women who, at a miminum, have served a full term as a club president.
We encourage you to be thoughtful and consider applying for the District Governor for 2020-2021.
The beauty of being a Rotary member is that members can apply their volunteer efforts in those areas where they have to most interest.
Rotary is dedicated to six areas of focus to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end polio forever. One of those six areas is Fighting Disease. Beyond ending polio, many members in our district also have a passion for research to find a cure for Alzheimer's and Dementia. For that reason, fellow Rotary member Theresa Hocker, Executive Director of the Alzheimer's Association, North Central Texas Chapteris sharing this information on an Alzheimer's Symposium in Arlington. Theresa is a member of the Fort Worth South Rotary Club. Theresa is available to speak at Rotary Clubs in our district (e-mail)
District 5790 has a GREAT group of incoming leaders to the Rotary World. Presidents-Elect, you are to be commended for the sacrifice you've already made to be a leader in your community and to MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Working together, we can GROW ROTARY, and provide SERVICE to our communities and our world. I have no doubt that you will truly BE A GIFT TO DISTRICT 5790. THANK YOU for all you do and all you're going to do.
Rotary members from 7 Rotary Clubs in Denton County are planning a trip to Belize the week of January 21, 2018. The goal is to install 5 Aquaponic gardens in villages in the southern part of the country (near Dangriga). These gardens will provide vegetables and fish for cooking and sale by the villagers.
The Rotary Club of Arlington is only five years away from turning 100, but it’s not your grandfather’s club. It doesn’t fit the old stereotype of a bunch of elderly, suit-and-tie white guys who mainly meet for lunch once a week. No, it’s not your grandfather’s club … except when it actually is.
As a new year begins and the next Rotary year approaches in July, club leaders will want to consider getting involved with strategic planning. Available to clubs is technical planning support and a “Visioning Process” for the entire club membership. In addition, new tools are available from Rotary for assessing club culture and analyzing club health.
Seeing what other Rotary Clubs do as service projects is always inspirational.

We are looking to have all 71 Rotary Clubs represented at the District 5790 All Clubs Celebration and we are asking that each Club put up a table highlighting what they have done this year and the projects, fund raisers, grants and support that they have done this year. Rotary International has provided districts and clubs some great graphics to use on the social media pages, websites and print media. These wonderful graphics provide excellent visual representation of the People of Action campaign RI is encouraging clubs to use to promote membership development and foundation giving.
Some of the articles in this Squeaky Wheel include People of Action graphics.
The Rotary RoseBowl Parade Float is possibly the largest multi-district public image effort promoting Rotary International, in the world!! It is seen by 73,000,000 households, 700,000 on parade route, and countless articles and print! This year's theme is "Planting the Seeds of Service" and believe it or not, the Tournament of Roses theme is "Making a Difference". Here is a sneak-peek of the January 1st, 2018 Rotary Rose Parade Float!
It seems that Rotary District 5790 Rotary members simply can not stay out of the Rotary Magazine. Check out the December, 2017 edition. There is a great article about the Great Western Trail and Rotary member efforts preserve a bit of history. Rotarians from 3 countries led this effort to bring the overgrown trail back to life and install trail markers commemorating this wonderful bit of history. Fort Worth Rotary member Sylvia Mahoney along with several others on our district helped launch this effort which eventually led to hundreds of Rotary members from Mexico to Canada embracing the project.
Of course, if you have read the printed edition that came in the mail this week, you will also have seen letters to the editor section of the magazine the photo of a Cross Timbers Rotary Club board meeting and a cryptic suggestion there may be a future RI president in that crowd. Hmm...we can all say I knew them when.

a quick update and pictures from my time in China so far. I have reached the halfway point in my fall semester and I am really enjoying living in Beijing. My classes are very interesting and I appreciate the chance to hear the perspectives of my Chinese professors and international classmates. In addition, last week I received my household goods shipment, including the Southlake Rotary flags. Thank you very much! I will look for opportunities to visit more Rotary Clubs while I am in China.
Below, I have attached a few photos from my travels around China while I have had breaks from class. My sister and her fiance were even able to visit while I was on Fall Break.

Rotarians do a great deal of good in the world and being a world-class Rotarian includes not only local community projects, but also projects that are beyond the club level. The magnitude of these projects is so significant that the support of all Rotary clubs and allied organizations is necessary. Polio is such a world-wide humanitarian project. Since 1979, with almost 40 years of unswerving commitment, Rotary through Rotarians, is recognized as the world’s primary (non-government) lead organization to lead the way to eradicate “the world’s greatest crippler,” polio.
Our World Class designation is not just because of our substantial $1.6 billion financial support, it is also because of the 38 years of polio efforts from a world-wide distribution of members, and their influence with global leaders. It is also a reflection of a Rotary culture that began during the first 20 years when individual Rotarians and clubs funded and managed local Crippled Children Hospitals to help crippled as well as disabled children.
Top global health experts and Rotary's polio ambassadors gathered at the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, to hail progress made by Rotary and its partners, saying polio is on the brink of eradication.
When was the last time there was polio in Europe? If you guessed 2002, the year the region was certified polio-free, you were wrong. The last time polio affected a child in Europe was last summer. In 2015, two Ukrainian children were diagnosed with paralytic polio, and, given the way the disease manifests itself, that means many more were likely infected and didn’t show symptoms. At least one Western news outlet deemed the outbreak “crazy” – but the reality is that no place on earth is safe from polio until the disease is eradicated everywhere.

In membership, one approach doesn't always work for an organization as diverse as Rotary. Each club has its own culture and set of dynamics which creates a unique set of minds working together as one to make the world a different place, a better place, a more peaceful and stable place. This independence makes Rotary International today one of the most effective humanitarian service organizations on the planet, yet Rotary's model also contributes to Rotary's membership challenges because membership is by invitation only. Inviting someone into a vibrant club is a process which each club establishes so all current members feel comfortable.
We will be providing 3 unique thirty minute sessions covering:
Membership Strategic Planning, Club Assessments, the Seven Step Plan and Rotary Club Central membership goals.
RI Membership Materials, Attracting Young Professionals, Gaining Diversity, Retention and other similar subjects.
Membership options such as Satellite Clubs, Corporate Membership, Membership Incentives and Membership Forums.
Generally speaking, Rotary club members do a great job of making non-Rotarian guests feel welcome when they attend our meetings. But, what happens when those guests leave? Do you record the guests name and contact information? If you do, does someone follow-up with that guest? What is your clubs procedure?

Rotarians and members of the public have been sharing memories and recalling how Sam inspired them through his hard work as a Rotarian and as a dedicated civil servant. It is clear that his impact and legacy were felt worldwide.
There will be a service for Sam on Friday, 21 July, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at St. Vincent’s Cathedral in Bedford, Texas. Friends in the area are encouraged to visit. Funeral services in Uganda are currently being planned.

In Rotary, the month of July is Rotary Officers transition month. It is a time when each clubs Board of Director's confirm their annual strategic plans and appoint committee chairs and members. Each club will be appointing members to their Foundation Committee, their Membership Committee and their Public Image Committee. Think sturdy three legged stool on which the remainder of the clubs service and fund raisers committees rest in order to be successful.

The culture of a Rotary Club should be determined by the many talented personalities of members all supporting one cause…”Service above self”. Getting the membership pulling together in the same direction, as a unified team, suggests the need for some degree of planning. Significant achievements of clubs result by design, not by chance!
Rotary District 5790 was well represented among the 42,100 and counting Rotary members from 174 countries. Not only do these folks have the excitement of rubbing elbows with a worldwide cultural smorgasbord of Rotary members, they are absorbing like a sponge all the latest and greatest information that Rotary has to offer. For example, on of the items distributed to the district governors in attendance is Rotary Internationals clarification of the RI policy with regards Club and District Activities related to the use of Guns and Weapons. District Rotary members may review that policy by clicking here. Zone 21b and 27 Zone Director also provided a summation of the policy which can be read here.
Check out the latest Membership Madness Dispatch (Volume I, Issue VIII). Congratulations to the 17 District Rotary Clubs that have achieved the district goal of 10% or greater net growth for the year. With a little over a month left in the Rotary year, lets keep the pedal to the medal, invite guests to join us at meetings and our community service projects.
May Membership Report has 32 Clubs at a Net Growth of 1% or Greater
A Satellite Rotary Club is an officially sanctioned by Rotary International Club under the charter of a parent club. The Satellite Rotary Club will operate under the parent Rotary Club Charter until such time as the satellite is large enough to petition RI for its own charter. The Satellite Rotary Club will have its own community service projects and fund raisers to support the community service initiatives established by the satellite clubs own board.
Satellite club members are listed as Satellite Club members of the parent Rotary club. Instead of a club president, there is a Satellite Club Director who is serving as one of the parent club Board of Directors and working closely with its president and membership committee.
District 5790 now has two officially sanctioned Satellite Rotary Clubs; The Rotary Club of Lewisville Satellite Rotary Club of Little Elm and the Rotary Club of Cleburne Satellite Rotary Club of Cleburne Evening.
It seems there has been a plethora of articles about the millennial generation lately. How are we to include them in the work place, our churches and ultimately our community. As Rotarians we are concerned about inclusion of all members of our community in our Rotary clubs. Perhaps one of the best known proponents of young professionals in Rotary is Evan Burrell. Many of us have seen is super Rotary Man image on various face book posts and articles in Rotary International's Rotary Voices. The following is a summary of a round table discussion moderated by Evan 2 years ago.
Evan Burrell, a member of the Rotary E-Club of Greater Sydney, New South Wales, Australia participated in Rotaract, RYLA, and Rotary's Group Study Exchange.

Let’s admit it: achieving a high growth rate (negative or positive) is easier with a small club. Still, after more than five years of almost continuous decline in membership, my club was excited to report a 60 percent growth in membership from July to October. We had 18 members on 1 July. Now we have 29, with 11 new members inducted in the first trimester of the new Rotary year.

Starting her 3rd year as the District 5790 Membership Chair (she was co-chair last year two years), Kay has demonstrated a great deal of success both as a Rotarian and a member of the Parker County business community where she works as the East Parker County Chamber of Commerce Director of Marketing and Events.

Her visit to the House of Friendship and realization of the diverse projects being carried out by over 2 million Rotarians in the world, won her heart. “So many needs being met by so many Rotarians was a powerful moment and I knew I would always be a Rotarian. My love for humanitarian work and the work of Rotary was an excellent pairing,” she said.
Officer Collins began her career at the Lewisville Police Department in 1998. She worked as a patrol officer until 2004. At that time, she became the department's first Crime Victim Liaison.

She is also working to extend the club’s reach to the Mansfield ISD Phoenix Academy to provide a new level of support to its students.

– E Leslie Pidgeon, 1917-18 RI president, speech to the 1918 Rotary convention
In 2016-17, our Rotary Foundation turns 100. That’s a century of Rotary members changing lives and improving communities all over the world. And that’s definitely something worth celebrating.
Through our Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects to provide clean water, fight disease, promote peace, provide basic education, and grow local economies. We’ve also been a leader in the fight to eradicate polio worldwide.
What better way is there to start your Centennial Year Celebration than by attending the the 2016 Foundation Gala Centennial Celebration Gala on November 12th at the Omni Fort Worth Hotel from 6 pm until 10 pm.

Your boss invited you to join Rotary because he thought it would be good for business and good for the community, and you said yes. It’s not surprising that our membership surged during that period.

Just before John Germ dropped by, Rick Youngblood took a deep breath. “You want to match his energy,” he says, “but he makes it hard to keep up.” Youngblood is the president and CEO of Blood Assurance, a regional blood bank in Chattanooga, Tenn., that Germ helped found in 1972.
This year our District Governor, Troy Secord encouraged our clubs and Rotarians to hold a community service project at the All Clubs Conference. The catch was: how could we involve our youth clubs? What to do, what to do? In the wake of a weak moment, I volunteered. I wasn’t worried, I knew Rotaractors, Interactors, Youth Exchange, and Rotarians would have my back. The only thing left was to decide what to do?
On June 4, 2016, District 5790 will be inducting Mary Ann McDuff as District Governor for the Rotary Year 2016-2017 at the Denton Country Club in Argyle, Texas. The event will be hosted by the Denton Rotary Club (Mary Ann's home Rotary Club).

Well Rotarians, we have concluded the All Clubs Celebration this year. What a fantastic year our Clubs and Rotarians have had in “Being a Gift to the World”.
Looking at all the activities that occurred over the weekend we had opportunities to do serious activities such as the business meeting.
Now that the 2015-2016 Rotary year is over I wanted to take the opportunity to reflect on the year as a District Governor.
When the year first started, I was very nervous primarily because I did not want to let down any Rotarian in our District. I wanted to be inspirational, be a testament to what Rotary can do for others, encourage Rotarians to be vibrant and engaged in their Clubs.
Are you looking for that next giving opportunity in Rotary? You need a plan!
Learn more about the Rotary Foundation and what it makes possible. How your gifts support Rotary’s work across the world and help ensure the future of Rotary. Deborah West, TRF Fundraising Chair will share the common challenges and success stories while giving you practical hands on tips for taking your donations to the next level.
Key topics in this session:
• How the Rotary Foundation Functions in District 5790
• Fundraising for the Annual Program Fund & End Polio Now
• Where District 5790 stands on current goals
• TRF Goals for 2016-17
• The Rotary Foundation committee current & incoming leadership
In this session, Conrad Heede will be discussing our Global Grant Scholarship program. Andy Eads and Lori fickling will be following up with some fantastic District 5790 membership success stories.
Some give the Gift of Life. Let John Purdue share the fantastic year our district has had in giving the gift of life. And, some wish to shar their gift of youth by reaching out to their communities as Young Professionals. Kayla Christianson will be talking about Rotary's Young Professionals initiatives.
How is our District Foundation a Gift to the World? Well, let Deb West count the ways. Conrad Heede will follow-up with the gifts the Rotary Fellowships provide and anyone that has been involved with RYLA knows RYLA is a blessing.
Our district has had a long history of supporting Wheel Chair Projects, Rotary Teacher Exchange and Shelter Box Projects throughout the world. Let Dan Morales, Conrad Heede and Brian Glenn tell you about this years successes.
Clint Ishmael looked forward to sharing with you about RYLA, the action-packed program that helps build confidence, enhances communication, and forges new friendships. This is an adventure that might change your life. Go RYLA!
From the moment participants walk in the hotel door on Friday Morning (May 13) until they leave Sunday morning the experience will be one of wall to wall celebration. Whether that celebration be that of Rotarian Service at the luncheons and dinners, plenary sessions and Friendship Hall or the service of our Vietnam Veterans the entire week end represents constant recognition of those that have served.
Just click on the green button and make your choices! Bring the family, remember, this is Arlington, the entertainment capital of North Texas! Our concierge committee will help create a fun experience for your family while you are attending the exciting and informative sessions. Do you like great Barbeque? Or maybe a craft beer tasting? How about some boot-scooting live music? Bring your family to the Friday night event and have the time of your life!

District Governors are selected for their leadership and because they have qualities we has Rotarians should emulate. Some little birdie shared one of those qualities that was highlighted during that day of celebration. We will let the photo's tell the rest of this story.
Ann Pape, Lewisville Noon Rotary Club, Fund Raising Support Coordinator
Lori Fickling, Cross Timbers RC
Rotary clubs throughout the district are always looking for fresh and innovative ways to raise money for TRF and their own club community projects. While some fund raisers can raise a lot of money, they also can require a lot of resources both in terms of cash, volunteers and the capacity of the supporting community that you are inviting. The fund raisers you choose need to fit your club, the culture of its members and the culture of the community you are asking to support your effort. So, what are the best practices for fund raisers?

District 5790 Rotarians have daily opportunities to bring about Peace and find resolutions to conflict. Yet, most of us don't give it a great deal of thought because it pales in comparison to the international conflicts we read about daily. So, how does the average Rotarian become involved? This was the subject of a recent blog post that you can find on the new Rotary District 5790 Blog.
2016-17 President John Germ announced the yearly theme as Rotary Serving Humanity. It's "the essence of who we are", he said. A strong emphasis on service, engagement of members and finishing the job of eradicating polio. "We started this more than thirty years ago...we're going to finish it"

My name is Gulin “Eva” Gelogullari. I am originally from Turkey and completed my first master's degree at the University of North Texas. Currently, I have two minors in Women's and Gender Studies and Merchandising. Last year, I received the Rotary Global Grant in Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution area of focus in 2015-2016. This wonderful grant helped me to pursue my second master’s degree in Conflict Resolution and Mediation at Tel Aviv University in Israel. I picked Israel to study and practice conflict studies since Israel is considered as the laboratory of conflicts and its resolutions. Our program is an interdisciplinary which helps me to understand conflict resolution and peacemaking through multiple academic disciplines. It is also very practical; for example, in spring semester I will be starting my internship in an NGO in Tel Aviv to practice conflict resolution and peace building. On our campus, I am the only Rotary Scholar so far which is a great honor but also a responsibility. I promote Rotary’s Four Way Test and the humanitarian projects, and encourage young students to apply the Rotary scholarships to further their education and make our world a better place.
Rotarian Action Groups provide assistance and support to Rotary clubs in planning and implementing community development and humanitarian service projects. Committed Rotarians, Rotarians’ family members, and Rotaractors who have expertise and a passion for a particular type of service organize Rotarian Action Groups. Rotarian Action Groups are organized around the principal that our vocations give certain expertise to a particular community development or humanitarian service that can be used beyond their own club.
District Governor Mary Ann McDuff announced the District Leadership Team for the 2016-2017 Rotary Year. District Governor Elect Announces the 2016-2017 Leadership Team
Happy New Year! It has now been six months since I became District Governor, WOW what a whirlwind. It started off with my training in San Diego and International Assembly, District Leadership Training, then moving on to PETS training, District Assembly, Installation Dinner, the Foundation/Membership Seminar, The Foundation Gala and not to mention visiting the 67 most fantastic Rotary Clubs in Rotary International. I would first like to say that the experience has been life-changing for Jeani and I. The exposure to the quality of the people we have engaged in our Rotary District is phenomenal from the individual members, the club leaders, Assistant Governors, to the District Leadership and finally and most importantly the support of the Past District Governors. The good works that all of you do for our communities, our District, Rotary and for the World is awesome!
A Rotarian Action Group is an autonomous group of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who are experts in a particular field, such as micro-credit or water and sanitation. Group members share their expertise by collaborating with clubs and districts on service projects.

As of the new year, district 5790 has just completed our sixth Global Grant in the La Moskitia area of Honduras. The last five grants have been primarily
to provide clean water through the use of filters. With the completion of this last grant, we have now installed over 2300 filters in approximately 50 villages and more than 100 schools providing clean safe water to more than 25,000 villagers and students. As with each grant, we worked with local Health Department to determine where to place the filters for homes and with the mayor of PuertaLempira Municipality to put the filters in all of the schools in the area.
From the desk of Norm King, District 5790 Youth Exchange Officer
Hi All,
I hope all is going well and your student has settled in and has become a part of your families. I can't begin to express my gratitude to each and every one of you for opening your homes and your lives to this young men and women.
In the last 4 years we have seen several students whose lives are changed as a result of their experience. Bailey Anderson, is one of those students.
Check out her blog by clicking Bailey Anderson Blog to see just how her experience has moved her from insecure 16 year old to person that sees value in every experience and person she meets. Fear if failure is the worst possible excuse for letting opportunity slip by.
Bailey Anderson, Outbound Youth Exchange Student (2011-2012) has already received numerous scholarships and awards and is going to hopefully be a candidate applying for the District 5790 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship upon her graduation from UT in the spring of 2016.

Rotarian Jim Vaszauskas (Mansfield ISD Superintendent) of the Mansfield Sunrise RC was recently contacted by the parents of one or the MISD graduates and now starting lineman with OSU. That student is Zach Crabtree and is one of the 20 OSU athletes chosen to visit victims of the tragedy in the hospital.
Zach is the one with the blue Nike Cap
The Mansfield Sunrise RC is donating to funds in support of those victims and is asking Rotary Clubs from throughout District 5790 to consider doing the same. Below is the text of a e-mail sent to Rotarian Jim from Zach's mother. The memo includes links to stories about the service the athletes are providing as well as links to a memorial fund being used to support the victims and their families.
There are those that would tell you that hosting a Rotary District Foundation is like trying to wrestle with a bull.
Not so in District 5790.
With the support of District Governor Troy Secord a prestigious speaker in PRIP Ray Klinginsmith and an outstanding Foundation Gala Committee the district hosted a record number of participants at this years Lasso the Moon Gala

Adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public.
The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians.
The contribution of your vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs of the community.
As a district, we promote 3 district wide activities that highlight these three tenants. District Vocational Committee Chair Chuck Chambers guides the district efforts.
The Rotary Organization is constantly evolving. One of the recent evolutionary changes that has confused at least this writer is what is our Rotary Theme for the month of October. Our trusty Rotary district 5790 Directory indicated on page 120 that the October theme is Vocational Service. So, we sent an e-mail to the club presidents requesting stories we could use that described how their club celebrates Vocations. And we received 4 or 5 responses that you will see in this issue of the Squeaky Wheel.
A little while later, while rooting through some information on Rotary. org I ran across the and discovered the theme for October was one of the six areas of focus " Economic and Community Development".
Recognition of vocations as an opportunity to serve takes on a special meaning at Arlington West.

It is not to early to start thinking about your club sponsoring a 4 Way Test Speech Contest at a local High School. Last year we had a record number 37 clubs that held contests. We hope to have even more clubs hosting contests this year. Now is the time to meet with school principals, speech teachers and debate team coaches so they can build the contest into the curriculum and be ready for club contests in January and February.

World Polio Day is October 24th, to honor the birthday of Dr.Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a polio vaccine. One of the special events that Rotary has planned, in partnership with UNICEF, is a "Livestream" event from New York City at 5:30PM our time on Friday the 23rd. We can watch a global status update on the fight to end polio and take part in the conversation. Guests will include Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners, celebrity ambassadors, polio survivors, and others.
There are many ways we can be a part of this moment in history. For example:
Host a viewing party, invite friends and co-workers
Have a viewing party in your office! Its at 5:30 anyway!
Write a letter to the editor of your local paper outlining the successes of Polio Plus
Invite local media folks to watch the event
How about this: A FLASHMOB! Arrange a venue with big TVs and a bar!

Auction Donation
We are getting down to the final weeks before the District Foundation Banquet. Every year, we ask each club to donate an auction item. This can range anywhere from $100 to priceless. Some examples of priceless items are; a weekend at a hunting lodge, a week at someone’s ski house, dinner with a local star, tickets to sporting events, etc. Smaller items can range anywhere from local talent (paintings, wine, food, golfing, etc) to popular items (headphones, jewelry, ipad). If it is unique or popular, it should sell pretty easy. If your club wants to send a check, we can go and purchase an item for you. The check would need to specifically say “for auction item”.
So you have read Allen's program description, you have read the brochure and you have read the testimonials. Yet you are still unsure you want to invest the three days and $420 in becoming a better leader, not only for Rotary but for your own career enhancement, I encourage you to check out our Alumni list.
”I thoroughly enjoyed my IFL experience. It helped me in several ways, some just related to Rotary and some I can use in other areas of my life. The facilitators were wonderful. They made us think differently and to view problems from different angles which not only helped me in my year as club President but also in my personal and professional life.
The IFL training weekend was one of the brightest spots in my 3 years in Rotary. Just the fact that my club had me in mind to participate in such a leadership seminar is an honor itself.
We have all heard how in the U.S. we are losing Rotary members every year. Membership numbers and retention are key to turning the tide. We need to have more of the younger Rotarians to carry the torch forward. That means investing in our young high potential members to make that happen. Learning leadership skills is one of the best ways to get them ready.
Thank you to the 22 Rotarians that donated at the Foundation and Membership Seminar last Saturday raising an additional $935 to End Polio Now. All Rotarians in our district are encouraged to go to Rotary.org now and donate through your My Rotary sign-in.

Has your club established a Blood Drive Goal? How many blood drives are you planning? Did you know that Rotary's roll in blood drives is not just getting membership to give blood? Our roll is to encourage the entire community to eligible blood donors to give blood. We understand that less than 30% of the population is able to give blood. So, our job is to get as many of our friends and neighbors as possible to a blood mobile where they can be screened and give blood if they are able. Rotary Clubs throughout District 5790 are being asked to host blood drives in their community throughout the year.

PDG Larry Petrash Recognizes District 5790 Rotarians
for their outstanding service
We all recall fondly PDG Larry's visits to our clubs as he encouraged us with the Hummingbird Parable.
As the parable goes the hummingbird was trying to put out a forest fire with one drop of water at a time.
The bear said, "What are you doing you fool".
Without stopping, Dukdukdiya, the hummingbird, looked down at... all of the animals. She said, “I am doing what I can.”
Congratulations to the 11 Recipients of the Hummingbird Award!
The Foundation Committee has a very busy month planned. First of all we are being reminded to submit our District and Global Grant proposals by August 1st. Then they have announced this years Foundation and Membership Seminar being held on August 22nd and finally, they are working on the Foundation Gala being held November 13th in the beautiful Hurst Convention Center.
Three Polio cases reported this week. See the updated numbers attached.
What is that Polio Picture? It's a beautiful END POLIO NOW light-up in Pakistan. In the first half of 2015 we have seen the lowest number of cases ever during this period, with just 33 cases in 2 countries as opposed to 122 cases in 9 countries at this time in 2014. This progress needs to be maintained through hard work to end transmission in endemic countries and to prevent future outbreaks. And I wonder Could 2015-16 be the year of the final Polio case?
Your Rotary Club is focused on making a positive difference in your community as well as around the world. You know that if you Club had more money you could mount or improve a project that is really needed.

Well, another big day in the life of a District Governor has arrived. July 1, 2015 I officially became a Past District Governor. The journey to PDG was absolutely incredible. Thank you District 5790 for the rare, and incredible, opportunity to be your District Governor for the past year. Thank you, more specifically, to the, now, Past Presidents that helped to make 2014-2015 a fantastic year for their respective clubs as well as to my Lieutenant Governor Deb Wey District Secretary Darhyl Ramsey, my Assistant Governors, and my committee chairs for doing their part to make the past year successful.
It is my pleasure to serve you during the Rotary Year 2015-16 as District Governor. Our theme from our Rotary International President K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran is “Be a Gift to the World." Over the past two years of training by Rotary International, Zone 21B/27 Leadership, and the insight of Past District Governors to hold this position, I have come to appreciate the dedication of the previous District Governors in their efforts in building the great Rotary District 5790. My hope is to build on the foundation that has been laid before me, so I need your help and assistance as we progress into this year.

The Rotary Club of Abilene continues to thrive and be a recognized force in the community due to the commitment and dedication of seasoned members and the new ideas and hard work of our younger members. And, the Taste of Abilene remains the club’s major fundraiser which provides grants to Abilene non-profits.

The electric power grid in Nigeria is very unreliable. This hospital is plunged into darkness for weeks at a time, forcing staff members to deliver babies by the light of a kerosene lamp. Through the hard work of Fort Worth International and other District 5790 clubs, this is about change.

Points can be earned if the club sponsors a new Rotaract club or Interact club or if it continues to sponsor one of these groups.
Points can also be earned if the club sponsors a new Rotary Community Corps or if it continues to sponsor an RCC.

On a related note our district membership is up 78 members (3%). Our goal is 5% net gain by end of Rotary fiscal year.
Tech geeks were dreaming of the annual rights of fall. I set my alarm for 1:50 a.m. so that I could be at my post as the season began at 2:01 a.m. (midnight plus one, Cupertino California time). My hunting gear was carefully prepared, Amex card to my left hand, reading glasses on my face, my trusty “old” iPad to the right side (just in case I could get in a few seconds earlier through the venerable beast). Fingers on the computer keyboard, I concentrated all my focus upon quarry.
It’s time for all Rotary clubs in District 5790 to begin efforts to make this Rotary year’s Four Way Test Speech Contestthe best ever. But that can only happen when dedicated Rotarians take the ball and run with it. Some of you are “seasoned veterans,” having made the contest a successful event in your clubs year after year. Still others are “rookies,” with either you, your clubs, or both, entering the contest for the first time this year. Either way, we’ll give you all the tools and all the info you need to have a winning season, culminating in the Super Bowl of contests, the Finals at the District Conference next May.
You can help promising students become leaders and experts in fields focused on sustainable change through scholarships. Along the way you'll cultivate relationships in your community and mentor some outstanding scholars.
This year, 10 District 5790 clubs are using their District Matching Grant funds to purchase dictionaries and distribute them to local area third graders. For those clubs that have not done a dictionary project it is hard to understand the fantastic connection that occurs between students and Rotarians when giving the dictionaries out.
This connection, not only promotes literacy, it promotes Rotary within the community, particularly when the schools post the event on their school websites and Facebook pages.
While District 5790 Governor Jim Giffin was away on district business recently, his club Southlake Rotary did its part for literacy and education in their community.”
“On August 17, 2013 at the District 5790 Membership Seminar, the District membership Team provided a complete Three-Year Membership Plan, complete with PowerPoint and Word Document materials. In addition to the Three-Year Plan presentation from Dave Hurt, the membership seminar also included success stories from Ross Paterson who highlighted their phenomenal club growth last year, from Nancy Smith who gave an in-depth presentation about attracting women to Rotary, and from Lance Winters who presented tips on how to succeed in getting publicity for club events and projects.
As advance notice, right now set aside Saturday, August 17…Your District Membership and Foundation Seminar! This year it will be held in Weatherford, beginning at 8:45….More details to follow…right now just set the date and confirm attendance. Lunch will be served for some good fellowship!
What’s New???
An innovative Three-Year Membership Plan: Not just strategic planning, but tactical “how-to implement” ideas that have been proven to attract new members and help retain existing members. A systems approach that engages membership teams…no longer putting the burden for club growth solely on the Club Membership Chair. This plan particularly targets the small and medium size clubs wanting to increase their membership, as well as large clubs who do not have a three-year plan or need new ideas in growing their club.
2013 Rotary District 5790 Four Way Test Speech Contest
Our 2013 Four Way Test Speech Contest Finals were held at our District Conference on Saturday, May 18, 2013. The winners were announced and prize money was awarded. For the enthusiastic audience, our high school student participants, and our distinguished panel of judges, it was an exciting contest. It was also our largest group of Finalists ever.
Under the theme, PEACE THROUGH SERVICE, the conference kicked off with an All Clubs luncheon at the Sheraton Fort Worth Hotel. Attended by some 185 Rotarians and guests at lunch, the conference got off to a rousing start as photos of club presidents and their significant others were posted on the big screen as they stood to be recognized. Past Rotary International Director Phil Silvers was introduced as the RI President’s representative to the conference. He set the tone for the remainder of the conference with a message from RI President Sakuji Tanaka emphasizing the importance of the conference and the importance of the Rotary theme – Peace Through Service. The keynote speaker was LTG (retired) Rick Lynch, Executive Director of the UTA Research Institute (UTARI). General Lynch gave a captivating talk about leading soldiers into battle and the leadership challenges he faced. He talked about his faith and how that faith helped him to successfully meet the many challenges he faced. That was followed by a very moving Celebration of Life led by PDG Paul Lucas. Photos of recently deceased district Rotarians were shown on the big screen as Paul read personal highlights of each individual. This was accompanied by the ringing of a bell and the placing of a rose in a vase for each individual. All in attendance were very moved. Following the luncheon, breakout sessions featuring district international and club projects were led by DGN Larry Petrash and AG Harris Brooks.
The highlight of the conference occurred at Friday evening’s dinner which featured a panel of experts discussing the fight against polio. Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), and RI presented a captivating evening describing the mission of their respective organization, its role in the effort to eradicate polio and how each organization interfaces with the other. Captivating really does not do this event proper justice – this was an event that is truly unique to a Rotary district conference. RI Director Silvers stated that the participating organizations sent their “A” team. He further stated that in his many years in Rotary, he had not experienced an event of this magnitude at a district conference. What more can be said…
Dr. Robert Linkins (CDC), Dr. Jeff Bates (UNICEF), Dr. Carolina Danovaro (WHO), Phil Silvers (RI), Lea Hegg (Bill Gates Foundation) & Chris McLucas (Rotary District 5790)
Saturday opened with a bright and early breakfast session monitored by PDG Sharron Miles. The keynote speaker was Diana Phillips who discussed literacy needs throughout the nation. Sharron also discussed the Blue Bonnet society and the grants generated through that organization. After breakout sessions on New Generations led by Kent Brown and Education led by PDG Sharron, a “bloody” lunch was enjoyed by all. PDG Chuck Kurtzman introduced speaker Merlyn Sayers, President and CEO of Carter Blood Care and followed his talk with a presentation of “vampire capes” to Merlyn and DG Hollis. It was a lighthearted program that placed proper emphasis on the need to give blood. Well done Chuck!
The afternoon breakout sessions featured youth. GSE presentations were given by our outbound team to District 4770 (Brazil). Our team was headed by Rotarian Chris McLucas. Also presenting was the incoming GSE team from Brazil featuring singing accompanied by a team member on the guitar (see the video below). It was quite apparent that the Brazilian team had a great time visiting Texas and there were more than a few tears shed as they discussed their adventures in our district. A big thanks to Stan Wiles who was the district coordinator for the Brazilian team visit. We had an extra treat as our district GSE team from last year that went to Australia also presented. This team was led by Marci Junge. Must be tough going to Australia on a Rotary visit… The afternoon concluded with the much anticipated youth 4 – Way speech contest. Mike Pope coordinated this effort and did a great job. This year’s contest featured seven contestants! In prior years, we normally had four speakers but due to increasing the number of regional contests and a tie in one contest, we had seven. And great they were! This contest is always a feature of the conference and this year exceeded expectations. As a matter of fact, in spite of having seven judges and scoring to the half point, we had a tie for first and fifth positions. The district is very generous in the prizes awarded to the contestants so I am sure they all walked away happy, regardless of their position finish.
The Governor’s Banquet marked the end of Saturday’s activities. DG Hollis presented awards to the top AG’s and to key members of the district staff. PDG Dan Morales was awarded the coveted Service Above Self award. In recognition for their giving to the Rotary Foundation, Major Donor awards were presented by RI Rep Phil Silvers and DG Hollis to DGN Larry and Paula Petrash and Dub and Karen Hirst. The evening concluded with a penetrating discussion by RI Rep Phil Silvers on the place of Rotary in the Middle East.
DG Hollis and I would like to express our appreciation to all who assisted in making this a successful conference. There are too many to individually thank at this time, but know your efforts ARE very much appreciated. Also a big shout out to all of you who attended the conference – thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to join us. Director Phil was very complementary of attendance and all other aspects of the conference.
District 5790’s annual conference in May featured a panel of global health experts who discussed polio eradication. The panel, moderated by Past RI Director Phil Silvers, included representatives from Rotary, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The discussions focused on how each organization is working in partnership with the others toward the goal of eradicating polio worldwide. Earlier this year, thedistrictraised $80,000 at an End Polio Now Banquet that featured keynote speaker Robert Scott, chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee.

Congratulations to our own District 5790 PDG Paul Geisel who will be riding on the Rotary Float with RI President Sakuji in this years Rose Bowl Parade! Be sure to watch the parade and perhaps catch a glimpse of Paul waving at you.
No Rotary International funds are used to build the float. Only donations from fellow Rotarian s like you. It is not to late to donate. Go to www.RotaryFloat.org.
We far exceeded our goals for this affair. Thank you! Thank you! Thank You!
The 268 Rotarian's that were able to obtain tickets for last Saturday's Foundation Banquet has a wonderful time. We had the opportunity to hear an inspiring talk by Ron Burton, Rotary International President Elect. This Norman Oklahoma native "talked Texan" as he shared his vision for Rotary and the Foundation and challenged all of us to "get our ask in gear" and ask Rotarian's to participate in the foundation. He invites all to "Engage Rotary, Change Lives"

The District 5790 Matching Grant Committee is seeking additional clubs to partner with clubs already working on international project grants. If you have a few hundred dollars or up to a few thousand you can participate with other clubs in their grant financing by donating this cash and becoming a partner to the grant. This must occur during the application process. So time is of the essence.
This is an excellent way to become acquainted with the Matching Grant process paving the way for future participation in Future Vision.

Each year, one of the most coveted awards for a club and club president is the attainment of the Rotary International Presidential Citation. This year the Presidential Citation was stringent requiring a club to meet both a membership and Foundation giving goal.
The Foundation giving goal included two components: 100% member participation in Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund, and have a net gain in membership of one member, and $100 per capita in Annual Fund Contributions.
The membership goal was that club met a minimum net increase of 1 member and retained 85% of their members. Additionally, the increase needed to include two of these four categories: women, younger professionals, RI alumni or diversity.
We have 64 clubs in our district, and it is an honor for me to recognize the following clubs for meeting the Rotary International Presidential Citation:
What an incredible year! As I have traveled throughout the district, I am inspired by the passion and compassion demonstrated by Rotarians. Not only are you making a mark on your community through local service, you are giving to the Polio Plus campaign and the Rotary Foundation. You are also meeting humanitarian needs all over the world by your matching grants, world community service projects and traveling to give the gift of mobility in Mexico and providng glasses for Haitians. AND--we're not through, yet!!
The District conference is a time to share these wonderful experiences with all of the Rotarians in our District.
Please SAVE THE DATE and plan on joinig us at the Sheraton Hotel in Fort Worth.

When Leland Mebine of Flower Mound was born 100 years ago, a loaf of bread was six cents and a stamp was two cents. But while the cost of things has changed over the years, some things remain the same such as Mebine's involvement and commitment to the community. His 100th birthday was celebrated by the Flower Mound Rotary in June with a traditional cake and singing of Happy Birthday. Mebine looked delighted as several Rotarians went to the podium to tell stories about the man who still regularly attends weekly Rotary meetings, works out at the YMCA three mornings a week, and has a way of getting his friends similarly involved in the community.
The international convention closes this afternoon. the speakers and breakout sessions have all been wonderful. 1 breakout was even lead by our own B.J.Smith of the rotary club of collyville.
Out of 25000 attendees, i actually saw 9 members from our district along with many other friends I have met from our zone.
I cannot say too much about the quality of programs and presentations here at the convention. To see what other Rotarians from around the world are doing to make the world a better place for all is truly inspiring.
Pam and I really appreciate this opportunity to represent District 5790 Rotarians and to experience first hand the global impact of our organization .
